Wondering how to get a medical cannabis card in Calgary? You must first book an appointment with one of our physicians for a Cannabis Consultation. From there you will be assessed by one of our qualified physicians, who will determine if medical cannabis is an appropriate treatment option for you. If you are eligible, the physician will write a Medical Document (prescription) authorizing the use of medical cannabis. This document will be forwarded to our Patient Care Team who will contact you directly to schedule a follow-up and guide you through next steps.
The only thing you need to bring to your first appointment is your valid provincial health care card.
The total time of your appointment usually takes about 30 minutes. However, our team is happy to support you if more time is required.
- Please remember that your license for Medical Cannabis possession is on each bottle of marijuana that is shipped to you. If you leave your house with the Medical Cannabis, it should always be carried in the original bottle.
- The license on the bottle has an expiration date, you are not legally allowed to carry cannabis after that date, unless you have seen a doctor and received a prescription past the date printed on the bottle.
- You are not legally allowed to leave the country with Medical Cannabis, even if you are travelling to places where cannabis is legal.
- You can travel/fly with Medical Cannabis within Canada, but please take all necessary precautions to prevent any issues by ensuring that you carry the cannabis in the original bottle you received it in which includes your license to possess Medical Cannabis.
Once our team sends your prescription and registration forms to the licensed producer of your choice you will be able to create a user account via that Licensed Producer’s website. This usually takes 1-2 business days. After your account is confirmed you will be able to order online, similar to any other online shopping experience. Once purchased your products will take 1-5 business days to arrive at your door. If you have any questions or concerns along the way our patient care team is happy to assist.
The cost of medical cannabis is set by the individual Licensed producer and varies from $6-$15 per gram.
Both recreational from a licensed dispensary and medical marijuana licensed producers are highly regulated and must meet certain conditions and standards. However, there are added benefits to purchasing medical cannabis from an LP. Patients have access to more strains, oils, capsules and licensed producers than recreational users. There are certain tax breaks, some insurance providers may cover your treatment, and you assure you get the right strains & CBD to THC balance you need for your specific condition. There are many reasons why people turn to self medicating with marijuana to help relieve social pressures, stress, forget a trauma, ease physical or emotional discomfort, manage pain and side effects of other drugs or medications, or try and reduce symptoms of a mental illness. Unfortunately, if your condition is not handled with the correct dosages, strains and CBD to THC balance, this can lead to worsened symptoms and increased stress levels. It’s important that you consider the use of medical marijuana instead, which has many benefits to aiding your symptoms correctly. Click here to learn more about getting medical cannabis in Calgary.
The form of cannabis you use will depend on what’s best for you when taking your treatment, which a qualified physician can help you choose. The main differences are how you take them. Capsules contain your exact dosage needed of CBD and are relatively easy to take. CBD oil is also fairly easy to take and dosages are more controlled. With just CBD you can take advantage of the healing properties of cannabis without getting high since no THC is present. Other forms such as buds, allow you to smoke/vape your medical cannabis, but require a little more work to take. They also may contain THC which does get you high. We highly recommend not smoking cannabis as it is not the best way to treat your conditions. Book an appointment to speak with a qualified physician about your options.
Regulated medical marijuana and recreational have few differences in the product itself, though there may be some differences in CBD to THC ratios which may affect “how strong” it is. Medical marijuana focuses heavily on helping you treat conditions vs just getting you high. We help you obtain just the right balance of CBD to THC for your unique condition and needs.
It all depends on your condition, its severity and how you feel. Some people may only need to take treatment for a short period of time, some once in a while and some daily. Speak with one of our qualified physicians to help determine what’s best for you.
More and more health insurance providers are covering part of the cost of your treatment, but not all of them. It’s best to contact your health insurance provider to see if they cover your treatment. Alberta Health does not cover the treatment itself, but they do completely cover your consultation with a physician and your prescription. Book a free consultation with a physician.
