Depression & Anxiety: CBD Oil Treatment

CBD Oil Treatment for Depression & Anxiety

 Anxiety

Anxiety is the basis of various disorders such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-   traumatic stress disorder, and phobia. Symptoms of anxiety vary greatly by person but may include rapid breathing, increased heart rate, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating. Common symptoms of an anxiety attack include numbness, sweating, feeling faint, distress, and shortness of breath. The cause of anxiety is unknown; however, it is likely to be a combination of factors such as genetic, brain chemistry, and environmental factors. Medications to treat anxiety include antidepressants and sedatives, which commonly result in unpleasant side effects such as memory problems, drowsiness, sexual dysfunction, headaches, diarrhea, and vision problems.

Depression

Depression is classified as a mood disorder and may result in long-lasting symptoms such as low energy, unbearable sadness, and loss of appetite. The most common types of depression include major depressive  disorder, persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, seasonal depression, postpartum depression, and psychotic depression. Common symptoms of depression include loss of interest in normal activities, thoughts of death and suicide, extreme irritability, insomnia, decreased appetite, and debilitating fatigue. Although anxiety and depression can occur separately, anxiety may be a symptom of depression. Symptoms  of depression may be managed with the same treatments as anxiety disorders.

CBD Oil Treatment for Depression & Anxiety

Cannabidiol (CBD), one of almost 200 cannabinoids found in cannabis, may be used to treat depression and anxiety. Unlike delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive.

Patients suffering from depression have exhibited alterations in the endocannabinoid system. There have been cases of female patients with depression having a decrease in a specific endocannabinoid, called the 2- arachidonylglycerol (2-AG), which is responsible for activating the Cannabinoid receptor Type-1 (CB-1) of  which is expressed predominantly by cells in the central nervous system. Other studies have demonstrated alterations in CB-1 in depressive suicide patients but findings have not been consistent. Nevertheless, the endocannabinoid system may be exploited to alleviate symptoms of depression.

As low serotonin levels are expected to be linked to depression, experts believe that CBD may affect how the chemical receptors in the brain respond to serotonin. An animal study found that CBD produced both anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects through interaction with chemical receptors in the brain.

Research on the use of cannabis as a treatment for anxiety has focused on generalized studies of medical marijuana, rather than CBD oil as an independent product. A small study demonstrated that CBD may alter the blood flow to regions of the brain linked to feelings of anxiety, thus revealing its potential to reduce   symptoms of social anxiety disorder. CBD oil has also been demonstrated as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety-provoked sleep disorder in one child, however more research is required to  support this data.

Pre-clinical and limited clinical evidence supports CBD as a potential treatment for anxiety and depression. However, strong clinical research is required to conclude CBD as an effective treatment. Long-term studies are also required to evaluate the benefits and risks.
